Imagine this: You walk down the quiet hallway to reach your classroom door. Your keys jangle as you enter the room—your room—and flip on the lights. The room is clean, silent, and organized. As you set down your belongings and sit at your desk, you smile: this is the last time for the rest of the day your room will be this quiet, but you wouldn’t have it any other way.
Mornings at Distinctive Schools look different for every teacher. Some help with Soft Start activities, some greet families at the door, some spend the time setting up their classroom. “I make sure the right anchor charts are up, I’ve got all copies, small group materials, any manipulatives ready to go, finalize any assessments, review my slides and any data so I can get in the zone before the day starts,” shares one 3rd grade teacher. These preparations mean students walk into classrooms where expectations are clear, routines are established, and learning can begin!
The morning sets the tone for the rest of the day. Classrooms hold space for dedicated social-emotional learning (SEL) to build authentic relationships with students. “I rotate between classrooms for our morning meeting SEL time where we have reflective conversations and activities around issues like not being afraid of making mistakes, taking ownership and accountability, or even just learning more about each other as people,” one middle school special education teacher describes. These conversations are the foundation of caring communities that encourage student vulnerability and curiosity. When students feel seen, heard, and valued, teachers can effectively challenge them with new and rigorous learning experiences.
Schedules may differ but the mission of coupling a deep sense of belonging with an academically rigorous educational experience is foundational to the Distinctive Schools model. “In our math class, we have checklists on the wall where students indicate their progress. They can work together on the same thing while I spend more one-on-one time so that they can get exactly what they need,” one 4th grade teacher says. “They hold each other accountable, reminding them to check off their progress, offering help.” This keeps learners actively engaged while allowing teachers the flexibility to provide targeted support. Handing the learning journey over to students equips them with durable, future-ready skills—like communication, collaboration, and accountability—that they will need to thrive after school.
We hold high expectations for every student, and we hold ourselves to that same standard. Our Wednesday afternoons are a commitment to all-staff professional development. Teachers have dedicated time for professional development, data analysis, and collaborative problem-solving. "My Kindergarten colleagues are a great resource," explains one 1st grade teacher. "If I’m struggling with a student, I can ask if there’s anything they’ve done in the past that’s helped." This intentional collaboration time ensures every student receives a high-quality educational experience that allows teachers to learn from each other.
By the end of the day, your classroom is filled with evidence of learning: chairs rearranged for small group discussions, worksheets filled with new ideas, and projects in various stages of completion. You look around and can’t help but feel overwhelmed with pride and accomplishment. As you turn off the lights and lock your door, you walk away, smiling, excited to see how the growth from today will impact the achievements of tomorrow.
Every teaching experience at Distinctive Schools is unique, and our mission to build an innovative, student-centered environment that prepares each learner for the future they choose comes to life every day in our classrooms.
